iRASTE Telangana is aimed at reducing road accidents on key highway corridors through the deployment of technology, data-driven insights, infrastructure improvements, and emergency care interventions. The project builds on the successful implementation of iRASTE Nagpur and expands the model to the highways of Telangana through multi-stakeholder collaboration.
The seed for iRASTE Telangana was sown when the iRASTE Nagpur team — having delivered excellent results with accident reduction on urban roads — understood the need for a similar solution for highways. After discussions with TGSRTC, and IT Dept of Telangana, the group decided to implement ADAS systems on 200 buses plying on 3 corridors — Hyderabad to Kodad, Hyderabad to Pullur, and Hyderabad to Adilabad. Gradually, we gathered partners to undertake activities under all four vectors.
| Vector | Agent of Change / Project Partner | Key Activities | Milestones Achieved |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vehicle Safety | iRASTE core team | Equipped 200 TSRTC buses with ADAS devices that give advance warning (alerts) to drivers to avoid road accidents. | In the April 2023–March 2024 window, ADAS buses reported 40% lower accidents. |
| Infrastructure Safety | CRRI / GMR concessionaire | Analyzed Blackspots for all 3 corridors and identified top 15 blackspots (5 for each corridor). Ranked them by severity and generated DPR for the 15 blackspots including corrective actions. | Infrastructure improvements are in progress at 3 sites and tender has been issued for 3 more on NH44. |
| Mobility Analysis | CRRI | Analyzed the alert data and road geometry to predict greyspots (potential blackspots). | 60 greyspots identified and ranked by severity across 3 corridors (Hyderabad–Kodad, Hyderabad–Pullur, Hyderabad–Adilabad). Insights shared with NHAI/GMR for corrective actions. |
| Awareness and Emergency Care | Indian Institute of Public Health-Hyderabad / Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) | Identified 10 locations near blackspots for training local people. Trained first responders on Active Bleeding Control (ABC) methods to provide first aid in crash emergencies. | 600+ Trystanders trained on ABC on NH-65 from Hyderabad–Kodad. 4 lives saved in past 3 months. |
The project officially concluded on July 30, 2024, after meeting key milestones across vehicle safety, infrastructure analysis, mobility intelligence, and emergency response training.
